Every early summer, in June we start to see mosquitoes, bugs or different other insects that give us troubles. Whether you live in the country or in the city, they are a constant and extremely annoying problem. Although they look tiny and fragile, they can become very disturbing and they can also transmit diseases. The good thing is that they are pretty sensitive to smells, so here are some plants that repel unwanted insects.

The first mosquito repelling plant is basil. It is a good companion for tomatoes and can be cultivated in your garden. Basil is a herb that’s good in the kitchen as well so, you have an additional reason to cultivate it for it’s taste, but also to drive insects away.

Lavender is one of the plants that acts as a natural insect repellent as well. Lavender has purple flowers and a dizzying scent. It is very helpful in driving away mosquitoes. In addition, lavender also has some exceptional medicinal properties, so it can be used for many purposes.

Mint is a natural insecticide for insects such as mosquitoes. It also kills their larvae within 24 hours of exposure to a solution of peppermint oil and water.

Another useful plant that helps us fight against mosquitoes is lemongrass. It can be planted in the yard, in pots and planters located either in the yard of the house, or on the balcony or windows.

Marigold emit a pleasant smell that scares off bugs.

Scented geraniums are also very helpful in keeping mosquitoes away. You can put them anywhere, on the balcony in hanging pots, in the yard or at the windows. They are not only charming, but also very useful against mosquitoes. Geraniums contain geraniol, which mosquitoes hate.

Floss flowers – these cute little flowers that can be blue, pink or white contain coumarin, a chemical used in bug repellent sprays. They work well in rock gardens, flower beds or as an edging plant. 

Chrysanthemums contain pyrethrin, a natural insecticide that repells mosquitoes and other insects.

Use essential oils. They have multiple benefits and their action is beneficial on several levels. In addition to the relaxing effect and good mood, certain essential oils also have the effect of keeping mosquitoes away:
lemongrass, mint, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, tea tree, citronella.
